Despite sustained diplomatic efforts, the Syrian regime continues to use chemical weapons against its own people. The minister said strikes conducted by French air force in Syria not targeted at Syria's allies.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged the members of the organisation to show moderation in the prevailing "dangerous" climate and to respect global law.

"I call on the members of the Security Council to unite and exercise that responsibility", Guterres said.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation has expressed support for the US -led strike against Syria, calling it essential to enforce the Chemical Weapons Convention.

"I urge all member states to show restraint in these unsafe circumstances and to avoid any acts that could escalate the situation and worsen the suffering of the Syrian people". North Atlantic Treaty Organisation was not involved in the strikes. So we strongly express support for the UN-led political process, there is no military solution to the conflict in Syria.

Representatives of the U.K, France and the USA will inform the council about the airstrikes in Syria, the source added.

"The use of chemical weapons is unacceptable, and those responsible must be held accountable", Stoltenberg said.
