Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., joined by Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, R-Wis., touts the GOP tax reform plan being crafted in the Ways and Means Committee this week, wuring a news conference on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2017.

Ryan went on to say: "I fully anticipate handing the gavel over to the next Speaker of the House after this term, and I think Kevin's the right guy to step up".

House Republicans' second in command - to succeed him as speaker, in an interview with NBC. "I think we'll have a seamless transition".

But in the interview with NBC on Friday, Ryan said he believed that Scalise supported McCarthy as the next speaker. "I'm not saying every single person in Congress". McCarthy backed out of a leadership race three years ago amid similar divisions.

During the White House press briefing Friday afternoon, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders declined to formally announce who President Donald Trump would support, although she noted that Trump had a "great relationship with Kevin McCarthy". Ryan said he wished to spend more time with his family in Janesville, Wis.

He added, "Well our leadership team, I'm saying".

McCarthy ran for Speaker in 2015 following the resignation of Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) but withdrew from the race at the last minute and Ryan was elected.

Neither McCarthy nor Scalise has announced he will run for speaker.
