Jeremy Corbyn: UK of 'waiting for instructions' from Trump on Syria

Jeremy Corbyn Avoid Iraq errors and give MPs vote

"Further UK military intervention in Syria's appalling multi-sided war risks escalating an already devastating conflict", Corbyn said, adding that "ministers should take their proposals, such as they are, to parliament".

"Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn is set to announce that the party would implement a new scheme providing free bus travel for all under 25s, should Labour win the next General Election".

President Trump spoke to the prime minister on Thursday evening, and the pair agreed that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had "established a pattern of unsafe behaviour in relation to the use of chemical weapons".

The Labour leader, in a letter to the Prime Minister, thanked her for informing him the bombing raids were taking place but re-stated his view Parliament should have been consulted. And Britain should press for an independent UN-led investigation of last weekend's horrific chemical weapons attack so that those responsible can be held to account.

U.K. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn warned Friday that British military intervention in Syria risks escalating an "already devastating conflict" and accused Theresa May's government of "waiting for instructions" from the USA president on how to respond to Saturday's alleged chemical weapons attack.

But Mr Corbyn said military action was unlikely to solve the situation.

But Carwyn Jones, Labour's First Minister of Wales, backed the action, as long as it was part of a wider plan to bring peace to the region.

There have been calls from opposition parties and some Conservative MPs for Parliament to have a vote beforehand.

BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg said it was understood the United Kingdom was planning a genuinely joint effort with the USA and France, rather than playing a supporting role. "The reason they are not doing it is they are frightened they will lose the vote", she said.

Four RAF Tornado fighter jets armed with the destructive Storm Shadow missiles took off from RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus during the early hours of this morning and targeted a Syrian chemical weapons site 15 miles west of Horns.

He said it was "deeply alarming" to see the return of chemical weapons to the battlefield in Syria and the airstrikes was the "right thing to do" in "settling the determination to ensure these weapons cannot be used".

Mrs May and Mr Trump had also "agreed it was vital that the use of chemical weapons did not go unchallenged, and on the need to deter the further use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime".

"We don't want bombardment which leads to escalation and a hot war between the U.S. and Russian Federation over the skies of Syria", he added.

The legal argument will form the centrepiece of Mr Corbyn's attack on the Government's handling of the issue when MPs return on Monday after the Easter recess.

That view was echoed by Liberal Democrat leader Vince Cable, who insisted that Ms May should have sought the approval of MPs before following the United States into Syria.
