Federal Bureau of Investigation sought Trump 'Access Hollywood' tape info in Cohen raid

Raid on Trump's lawyer sought records on Access Hollywood tape

CBS News confirms the search warrant allowed authorities to look for records concerning the release of the 2005 Access Hollywood tape in which Mr. Trump was heard making vulgar comments about women.

Daniels has publicly stated the payment was hush money to insure her silence about a 2006 affair with Trump.

The special counsel and an attorney for Cohen did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Cohen's office and hotel room were raided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, as officials sought records pertaining to the tape among other things, The New York Times reported Wednesday.

"This court should not accept Cohen's invitation to make new law and convert a duly authorized search warrant into a subpoena", prosecutors said, calling it a "dangerous precedent" to let defense lawyers delay a probe "in a case of national interest". And they help explain why Mr. Trump was furious about the raid. Lawyers for both Cohen and the president told a NY federal judge that the material is protected under attorney- client privilege. And it delved deeply into Cohen's past, including documents about Cohen's personal and business finances.

Trump, who in the last month has escalated his attacks on Robert Mueller's investigation, said it was a "disgrace" that the "broke into" his lawyer's office.

In addition to facing legal scrutiny for possible bank fraud and campaign finance violations, Cohen is a subject of interest in at least four investigative threads related to Trump, including some within the Russian Federation probe. But, as the Times notes, the fact that agents were looking for documents related to the tape exposed a "new front" in the investigation into Cohen by the United States attorney's office in Manhattan. Cohen's attorney has said the search was carried out on behalf of the USA attorney's office in Manhattan in part because of a referral from special counsel Robert Mueller. There were no other women beyond Daniels and McDougal named in the warrant in regard to the President, the source said.

Trump slammed the operation on Twitter on Tuesday by proclaiming that "attorney-client privilege is dead!" Prosecutors can also obtain privileged communications between an attorney and client if they have evidence those interactions further a crime or fraud.

Previous reports said Federal Bureau of Investigation agents in the search had sought records on payments to Stormy Daniels and to another woman who claimed she had an affair with Trump. Both women say they had affairs with Trump.
