United Nations chief regrets Security Council stalemate over Syria

“The Cold War is back” : UN's Secretary General, Antonio Guterres

"Increasing tensions and the inability to reach a compromise in the establishment of an accountability mechanism threaten to lead to a full-blown military escalation", Guterres told an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council called by Russian Federation.

Vassily Nebenzia told reporters after a closed council meeting Thursday on chemical weapons in Syria that he hopes an open meeting with the United Nations chief can be held "soon".

The Cold War has returned, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Friday in describing the military crisis in Syria.

António Guterres believes that the cold war camethe Cold war is back, but the old deterrents to it are no longer valid.

Noting that inspectors from the Organisation for the Prevention of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) were due to visit the site shortly, it underlined the Damascus government's commitment that they will have full access and freedom of movement.

US President Donald Trump cancelled a planned trip to Latin America today (13 April) to focus on responding to the Syria incident, the White House said.

The Kremlin said on Friday in its readout of the phone call between the two presidents that Putin and Macron agreed to ask their foreign policy chiefs to "keep in close contact" to "de-escalate" the situation in Syria.

Britain will take action to "alleviate humanitarian distress and deter the future use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime", the British Ambassador to the United Nations, Karen Pierce, said here Friday.

It is incumbent on the UN Security Council to hold perpetrators of these crimes to account and make clear to the world that the use of chemical weapons will not be tolerated.

According to a statement by the French presidency, Macron called for dialogue between France and Russian Federation to "continue and intensify" to bring peace and stability to Syria. "But should the United States and our allies decide to act in Syria, it will be in defense of a principle on which we all agree", Haley told the UN Security Council.

At least 60 people were killed and more than 1,000 injured in Saturday's suspected chemical weapons attack on the town of Douma, according to a Syrian relief group.

"Unilaterally taking military action by circumventing the Security Council is inconsistent with the principles and purposes of the UN Charter and runs counter to the norms of global law and those governing worldwide relations".

The Damascus suburb of Douma was recaptured by the government this week, so the experts from the UN-backed Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons are expected to have easier access than on previous occasions when the alleged attacks happened in areas of ongoing fighting or those controlled by radical Islamists.

French President Emmanuel Macron said Thursday he has proof that Syrian President Bashar Assad's government was behind chlorine attacks in recent days.
