Premier Calls on BC to Abandon its Pipeline Opposition

Premier Calls on BC to Abandon its Pipeline Opposition

Both the National Energy Board and the federal cabinet approved the Trans Mountain Pipeline project in 2016 after balancing all relevant considerations and ultimately determining that it was in Canada's national interest.

Kinder Morgan says 51 First Nations have signed on to the project.

The company warned Sunday it may abandon the expansion unless an agreement is reached by May 31 to restore shareholder faith.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has summoned Horgan and Alberta Premier Rachel Notley to Ottawa for a meeting on Sunday to discuss the escalating pipeline feud.

"We are not thwarting the project", he said.

"Either B.C. and Canada are places in which you can invest with confidence, knowing the rules won't change after the fact regardless of whether you are a pipeline project or small business owner, or they are not".

Carr said the government's central focus is seeing the pipeline built, and the best way to insure the pipeline goes ahead is to take out "all of the uncertainty that has clouded the capacity of investors to make a responsible decision". We are calling on the federal and provincial governments to meet and resolve this matter and move past the political gamesmanship we have witnessed for the last number of months.

"The Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion has been reviewed and it has been approved".

Energy Minister Margaret McCuaig-Boyd repeated that message in budget estimates Monday night.

The federal government has been vocal in its backing of the Trans Mountain expansion of the pipeline between Alberta and the B.C. coast, arguing it is a pipeline in the national interest.

Finance Minister Joe Ceci told Postmedia on Tuesday he doesn't think there was mixed messaging around the economic reliance on pipelines. "We're confident all the pipelines will be built, so we're just going to keep going down this road", he said.

Notley has even suggested her government is prepared to buy the Trans Mountain pipeline outright, while Horgan is vowing to continue pushing back against the expansion. In March, she promised to bring forward legislation that would allow Alberta to restrict its oil exports, harkening back to a move by former premier Peter Lougheed.

"That logic is the federal government and Alberta would expect to win", he said.

"Standing up for people does not mean standing in the way of a fair process", the premier said.
