Seahawks 86'd Kaepernick Workout Over Kneeling Stipulation

Kaepernick

Colin Kaepernick was supposed to meet with the Seahawks this week, but the team made a decision to hold off on the visit after the quarterback would not promise to stop kneeling during the national anthem, ESPN reported, citing unidentified sources.

An NFL source told ESPN that the team wanted assurance that Kaepernick wouldn't kneel during the anthem and postponed the workout when he declined to give it.

The Seattle Times reported that the decision wasn't exclusively related to Kaepernick's stance on kneeling, but that the team wanted a firmer plan about his activism and how it might impact football.

After Kaepernick and the San Francisco 49ers parted company a little over a year ago, he went unsigned in 2017, following a relatively successful 2016 campaign.

Kaepernick did not agree with that proposed requirement and the team canceled a planned workout with him. Kaepernick has since filed a grievance against the league.

After filing the lawsuit, Kaepernick said on Twitter that he had done so "only after pursuing every possible avenue with all National Football League teams and their executives".

I don't know how the Seahawks or anyone else could expect Kaepernick to renounce kneeling at this point as a condition of signing him. Also, the free agent market for backups is going a bit haywire with guys like Josh McCown commanding eight-figure salaries. McNair kicked off last month's owners meetings by adamantly reinforcing his controversial stance, saying that the national anthem is no place for protests. Eric Reid, who knelt in solidarity with Kaepernick when the two were 49ers teammates in 2016 has likewise had trouble finding work.

Several depositions have already taken place, including Baltimore Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome and head coach John Harbaugh.

While the anthem protests eventually died down last season, during the owner's meeting the topic was brought back up.

Earlier this week, the Cincinnati Bengals reportedly hesitated to sign Reid, another free agent, because he too would not promise to stand for the anthem in 2018.
