District governor among 12 killed in militant attack in eastern Afghanistan

Fourteen people including a district governor were killed in a Taliban attack in Afghanistan's southeastern Ghazni province Thursday, the head of security for the province said.

Ramazan Ali Moseni, also a deputy leader in Ghazni state, mentioned 25 Taliban had been murdered in the gun battle that started out Wednesday night time and lasted to the morning. The Taliban planted mines to prevent government reinforcements from coming to help and quickly took responsibility for the attack.

The Taliban controls large swaths of Ghazni, a strategic province near the border with Pakistan.

In a separate incident north of Kabul, a sticky bomb destroyed an oil tanker outside the Bagram military base, where USA forces are stationed.

Consistent with trends observed in 2017, the report noted that civilian casualties attributed to pro-government forces in the first quarter of 2018 reduced by 13 percent to 407 civilian casualties.

Moseni reported that the Taliban fighters withdrew the stable chemical in Khuja Omari district and the protection forces that were there were united after by federal government reinforcements. No immediately took responsibility for the bombing.

Shah Agha, a resident of the area, confirmed to Pajhwok that the Taliban insurgents had escaped to Tagab and Ala Sai districts.

Anti-government elements also continued to direct attacks against the minority Shiite community, with 154 of its members killed or wounded, "nearly all from suicide and complex attacks" claimed by IS, the report said.

"Afghan civilians continue to suffer, caught in the conflict, in ways that are preventable; this must stop now", said Ingrid Hayden, the secretary-general's deputy special representative for Afghanistan.

The Taliban used heavy weapons, he said. Other than the district governor, Ali Dost Shams, all the casualties were security forces, Mohsen said.
