Ben Sasse: Donald Trump Ready to Rejoin TPP to Help American Farmers

The Latest Trump says airstrikes on Syria underway

President Donald Trump instructed his top advisors to begin exploring how the USA could join the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) on Thursday, just one year after abandoning the trade pact he'd blasted throughout his presidential campaign as a "horrible deal" and a "disaster". "China is a bunch of cheaters and the best way to push back on their cheating would be to be leading all these other rule of law nations in the Pacific that would rather be aligned with the US than with China".

Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) said that he and others at the table raised the point that "if you really want to get China's attention, one way to do it is start doing business with all the people they're doing business with in the region: their competitors".

The GOP political leaders are especially concerned about the impact trade retaliation from China could have on US agriculture, which relies heavily on exports to China.

President Donald Trump has instructed trade officials to examine re-entering the 11-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership, Republican lawmakers said on Thursday (April 12). The countries involved in the agreement are: Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam. It's a harsh word - it's a rape of our country.

"We should be leading TPP", Sasse said. "He's going to get rid of a lot of taxes and tariffs", Trump said of Xi.

Roberts and Sasse said they poured cold water on the president's idea that if tariff tensions with China escalate, he will provide federal aid to USA farmers.

Abandoning TPP was a signature motif of Trump's campaign.

"Very thankful for President Xi of China's kind words on tariffs and automobile barriers", Trump said on Twitter on Tuesday.

In May 2016, as domestic political backing for TPP was starting to erode, Obama wrote an op-ed in The Washington Post aiming to rally support.

The new effort to rejoin the TPP is the latest swing in the Trump White House's volatile trade policy.

Kevin Kennedy, president of a steel fabrication business in Texas, said tariffs on steel and aluminum imports have led US steel producers to raise their prices by 40 percent.

The President is saying he might want to rejoin TPP. It would be aimed at opening USA farmers to more overseas markets. Sen Ron Johnson, R-Wis., was among a handful of senators who recently visited China to meet with government and business leaders there.

Trump said it might be easier to come to an agreement now that 11 other nations have signed on, according to Sasse.

Eleven countries signed the agreement last month.
