Baby boy born four years AFTER his parents died in auto crash

Chinese kids are pushed into classes early in life

The embryo was implanted into the womb of a surrogate mother in Laos before the baby boy, named Tiantian, was born at a hospital in Guangzhou, China, in December.

The couple had been married for two years had frozen embryos hoping to have a child through in-vitro fertilization (IVF) before they died in a vehicle crash in March 2013.

However, the couple tragically died in a vehicle crash in March 2013, five days before a fertilised embryo was due to be transplanted in Liu.

In addition, surrogate motherhood is illegal in China, and so the couple's parents were forced to seek her out of the border. This is reported by Chinese media. Liu's mother gave him the name Tiantian, or "sweet".

It was the first case of its kind and there was no regulation in China advising how to handle untransplanted embryos, so the grandparents were embarking on new legal territory.

Laos has become the latest impoverished nation in Asia to witness a flourishing but legally opaque commercial surrogacy industry after countries like Thailand, Cambodia and Nepal outlawed the practice in recent years. The two sets of grandparents had to have DNA tests carried out to prove their relationship to the child, in order for them to keep custody.

The parents of Shen and Liu eventually found a surrogacy agency that agreed to accept the embryos and bring them to Laos, a southeast Asian country where surrogacy was allowed.

When they were killed the embryos were frozen at -196C in a liquid nitrogen tank in a hospital in Nanjing. The next problem for the little one was the issue of his citizenship, so the surrogate mother traveled with a tourist visa to China to give birth to him.

The grandparents have not decided how to tell Tiantian about his background.

He said: "The boy is destined to be sad on his arrival into the world".

Shen Jie's father, Shen Xinnan, said he only plans to tell the boy that his parents are living overseas and reveal what happened to his parents when he is older.
