Ryder Cup hero Patrick Reed becomes major champion with Masters win

McIlroy endures more Masters disappointment

One of the messages Patrick Reed received for his hard-earned Masters victory came from Tiger Woods, who added a personal touch to his tweet of congratulations.

Expectations that Woods could contend in his first major championship since 2015 fueled an explosion in sports betting and a surge in television ratings. "I am who I am".

He won in his fifth start at Augusta, the city where he went to university, Reed said this was the one he wanted to win. I think that's just because of the history and everything that's gone on here at Augusta National and how special it is to all the golfers and special it is to just golf in general around the world.

The most notable aspect of his immediate post round celebration wasn't who was there - his wife Justine, a regular on Tour, was the first to greet him with a kiss - but who wasn't there. It seems that Captain America, as Reed was dubbed after his Ryder Cup heroics, is a stranger in his own country.

There are always a ton of reasons why ratings for an event wind up good or bad, but in this case we shouldn't undersell the simplest one: that this year's Masters was a thoroughly exciting tournament, with great young players battling for the green jacket.

"Everyone knows why I got kicked out of UGA - because of two drinking incidents".

"Whether it be mindset or whatever, I just didn't quite have it today. He just hung in there a little bit better than I did and got the job done". This is why the thing still feels like the Super Sunday of golf.

Spieth shot an 8-under 64 in the final round and finished at 13 under, two shots behind leader Patrick Reed. "Reed pleaded ignorance, but the other Georgia players were convinced he had been caught red-handed trying to cheat". "But after I parred the first, that sort of settled me down".

Nike is "doing a new thing where all the players stay in the same kind of storyline", Reed said last week.

The new Masters champion stressed that he's very comfortable about his past and current career - and his past and current life. "It's hard to take any positives from it right now, but at least I put myself in the position". "I stand by my comments".

"I've evolved into childhood; childhood into high school; high school into college; college into professional golf", he elaborated when talking to CNN. And it wasn't just about them.

Described by some as a fiery competitor and a blowhard showboater by others, Reed is one of golf's more polarising figures - no more so than when he is representing the United States on the global stage. Why don't you ask them? In five years on the PGA Tour, he had only five victories.

"When people come in the golf house we can show them the two National Championship golf trophies and they know who Patrick Reed is and now we can say you know this guy has a Green Jacket and he played at our school and he played and practiced at our facility".

Until Sunday, he was best known for the trophies he shared at the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup.

And finally, a word about Reed being the "villain" of golf.

"Having to shoot under par in the final round to win my first major, it was awesome", Reed said.

There's certainly no glass ceiling to the American's ambitions.

"I went out there and I tried so hard to get the ball in the hole", he said of prior major starts, including his runner-up finish at the PGA Championship last August.

This week was different. His tee shot was too far left and hit a tree limb. Instead, Reed just went out there and played. I had my caddie remind me of that the entire week. It's just a way of God basically saying, let's see if you have it.
