Russian Federation says Israel carried out attack on air base in Syria

Pentagon denies US hand in missile strikes on Syria’s Homs airbase

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday promised quick, forceful action in response to a deadly suspected chemical weapons attack in Syria, appearing to suggest a potential military response.

The Russian military said on Monday that two Israeli war planes carried out strikes on Syrian regime air base from Lebanese air space with eight missiles after USA and France denied responsibilty for the attack.

According to Syrian officials, the air strikes killed and injured a large number of people and among those killed were Iranians and members of Iranian groups.

But France's Permanent Representative Francois Delattre countered that only the Syrian government and its allies had the capability to develop the chemical and said that there was no doubt about who carried out the attacks.

The Syrian American Medical Society and the civil defence service, which operates in rebel-held areas, said 49 people had been killed in the suspected gas attack.

"Many dead, including women and children, in mindless CHEMICAL attack in Syria", Trump tweeted on Saturday.

Russian Federation and Iran have given crucial military and diplomatic backing to Assad's government throughout Syria's seven-year conflict, which has killed hundreds of thousands of people and displaced millions.

"At this time, the Department of Defense is not conducting air strikes in Syria", the Pentagon said in a statement.

Both the US and France had threatened a response over the suspected use of chemical weapons, with President Donald Trump and President Emmanuel Macron issuing a statement on Sunday vowing to "coordinate a strong, joint response". We laid down red lines there, which said that we would not allow Syrian land to be a springboard for game-changing weaponry to Lebanon, we would not allow the building of an Iranian army in Syria and we would not allow the opening of another front on the Golan Heights. Washington denied this, and France, which in February had said it would strike in the event of a chemical weapon attack on civilians by Syrian government forces, also said its forces were not involved.

"I have seen more compassion in [my Jewish neighbors in Antwerp] than in many Syrians we used to consider our brothers, and who are now bombing us with planes, missiles and tanks", said Aboud.

The UN Security Council has called an emergency meeting for Monday to discuss the incident amid worldwide outrage over the alleged used of poison gas.

Douma is the last remaining opposition-held town in Eastern Ghouta, once the rebels' main bastion outside Damascus but now ravaged by a seven-week regime assault.

Reports from Syria say that "several missiles" his the airport, leaving many "dad and wounded".

The symptoms were consistent with chemical exposure.

Britain's Permanent Representative Karen Pierce said the situation today was worse than that during the Cold War because then there was no such flagrant disregard of the universal prohibition against chemical weapons. The missile strikes did little long-term damage to Syrian government forces and Assad's position has only become stronger with Iranian and Russian support.
