Kim Jong-un makes first official mention of United States talks

U.S. confirms North Korea's Kim Jong Un willing to talk denuclearization official says

South Korean officials previously said Trump had agreed to meet Kim "by May", but the White House never officially set a timetable for talks. Over the weekend, even American officials said they had received equivalent assurances right from mature North Korean counter parts.

He delivered a report "on the development of the recent situation on the Korean peninsula", including the separate summit with South Korea to be held later this month, it said.

Should all go well with Pompeo's confirmation, he should be in place by the time of a prospective summit meeting between Trump and Kim.

The President said planning is continuing for the unprecedented meeting, which he said would address North Korea's nuclear weapons.

Trump said that Washington "maintains contact with North Korea", and also noted that the United States wants a "fair deal".

The North Koreans are pushing to have the meeting in their capital, Pyongyang, CNN reported late last week, citing Trump administration officials, although it is unclear whether the White House would be willing to hold the talks there.

Neither of the officials would say when or how the contact took place, nor in what location.

DPRK is the acronym for the North's formal name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

"They've said so. We've said so", Trump said.

The two sides announced last month that they reached an agreement "in principle" to further open South Korea's auto market to the USA in exchange for South Korea's exemption from new U.S. tariffs on steel imports. It means mutual steps to get rid of nuclear weapons, including requiring the United States to take down the nuclear umbrella it has put up over South Korea and Japan.

The second South Korean official said the South's National Security Office head, Chung Eui-yong, could speak with Bolton over the telephone as early as Tuesday.

Indeed, at the end of November, the last time it tested a missile, North Korea declared it had built a new intercontinental ballistic missile "tipped with super-large heavy warhead" that marked "the completion of the rocket weaponry system development". The news was confirmed when North Korea has shown their willingness to discuss the issue.

Tension over North Korea's tests of nuclear weapons and ballistic missile surged previous year and raised fears of USA military action against Pyongyang.

A possible meeting between the nations was originally the product of South Korea's efforts in February during the Winter Olympics.
