Facebook to notify users if data was shared with CA

Mark Zuckerberg says even his Facebook data was handed to Cambridge Analytica

"Not only did they fail to safeguard the personal information of millions of users, they concealed it from us? and this is not the first time the company mishandled user information".

The Facebook CEO says his company found about 470 accounts and pages linked to the St. Petersburg-based Internet Research Agency, which generated around 80,000 Facebook posts over roughly a two-year period. Here's what you need to know.

Mr. Zuckerberg's public remarks will be closely watched by investors. On Monday, the Energy and Commerce Committee published Mark Zuckerberg's prepared remarks, ahead of his appearance before the committee on Wednesday.

The first hearing kicks off Tuesday at 2:15 pm ET, and Business Insider will be in attendance and covering it live.

He will then explain how Facebook aims to prevent this from ever happening again, such as more scrutiny of developers and limits on the amount of information they can collect in their apps.

What's Zuckerberg going to say?

In the testimony released by the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which he is expected to deliver Wednesday, Zuckerberg apologizes for fake news, hate speech, a lack of data privacy and foreign interference in the 2016 elections on his platform.

Facebook is also facing a privacy scandal after it was revealed a data firm Cambridge Analytica misused data from up to 87 million users.

"The government has taken serious note of the points made by Facebook and CA and will soon decide on the next line of action", the person said. Facebook says most of the affected users (more than 70 million) are in the USA, though there are over a million each in the Philippines, Indonesia and the United Kingdom. He reportedly met with lawmakers on Capitol Hill on Monday as well.

Zuckerberg did not respond to questions as he entered and left a meeting with Senator Bill Nelson, the top Democrat on the Senate Commerce Committee.

"It's just scary for us grandmothers raising grandkids and having all that kind of information out there on the grandkids and myself as well", said local Facebook user Mannie Walker.

Facebook has rolled out a series of changes on its platform in recent weeks aimed at bolstering data privacy and advertising transparency. The company is now informing users if their data has been compromised in Cambridge Analytica breach or not.

Companies that have been victimised by computer hacks have been accused by lawmakers of failing to take adequate security measures to protect their customers' personal information.

Between the Cambridge Analytica scandal, American elections influenced by a defiant adversary, and deliberate misinformation on social media sites, there are enough existential crises to our democracy.

The claims here have clear parallels to Cambridge Analytica, a British political consulting firm that obtained data of 87 million users - those who took a personality quiz, and their friends.

The roll out is happening incrementally, so not everyone who was affected will know immediately.

In the testimony, Zuckerberg acknowledges that the questioning will likely be critical.

The steps are created to deter online information warfare and election meddling that US authorities have accused Russian Federation of pursuing, Zuckerberg said on Friday. "I don't have a specific policy announcement on that front, but I think we're all looking forward to that testimony".

You can watch the Senate hearing on Tuesday live on C-SPAN. You can tap on the link to learn how you are affected by the breach. The committee also plans to broadcast the event. Or, you can livestream it.
