Trump won't attend White House Correspondents dinner this year as well

President Trump will 'probably' skip White House Correspondents' Dinner — again

Donald Trump will snub the annual White House correspondents' dinner for the second year in a row, organisers said Friday, amid sustained attacks by the USA president on United States media.

Trump remains the only president since Ronald Reagan to skip the dinner (and Reagan had a pretty good reason: He had been shot).

"I probably won't do it", he said.

"I just think that I want to get it straightened out with the press before I do it", he said. "They make up the sources".

Griffin, who's making a comeback since her controversial photo with a severed Trump head, grabbed eyes when she announced plans to attend the dinner as a guest of LGBTQ media outlet The Blade.

But the president, who has long had an adversarial relationship with the news media, did not elaborate on how he planned to do so.

Trump had said in an interview aired on Friday on NY radio station 77 WABC that he probably would not attend the dinner, which normally features big names from the worlds of politics and entertainment as guests of media organisations.

Trump became the first president since Ronald Reagan to skip the dinner past year.

Presidents traditionally attend the dinner, which offers a standing invitation to the occupant of the White House.

Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders will take the President's place and represent the administration, officials told the group.

He also said it was unlikely he would attend the April 28 White House Correspondents' dinner, which he did not attend in 2017.

The dinners have historically featured a speeches from the president, offering a chance to practice self-deprecation or poke fun at their contemporaries, as well as professional comedians, who often set the presidents in their sites.

Donald Trump, then the Republican presidential nominee, laughs with wife Melania during the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner in 2016. He did, however, telephone well wishes and a few jokes during the dinner.

When asked for comment on Friday, the White House noted that Mr. Trump had pretaped his radio appearance, rather than calling in live.
