Korea seeks summit with Trump in Pyongyang

Report: US Talks Secretly With North Korea Ahead Of Trump's Meeting With Kim Jong Un

North Korean officials have told their U.S. counterparts that Kim Jong Un is ready to discuss denuclearization, an assurance that could pave the way for a meeting with President Donald Trump, reports said Sunday.

CNN on Saturday quoted multiple government officials familiar with the discussions as saying that the talks are a sign that planning for the highly anticipated meeting is progressing.

According to CNN, the talks are being led by Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) director Mike Pompeo, using intelligence back channels, and his team has met North Korean officials in a third country.

Last month, China said it won a pledge from Kim, who was on a surprise visit to Beijing for talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, to denuclearize the Korean peninsula.

CNN quoted United States officials as saying that the summit will be held at the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar - a proposal that North Korea has already relayed to the U.S., according Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun.

North Korea is reportedly pushing to hold the talks in its capital, Pyongyang, but it is unclear whether Trump is willing to travel to the city. The Koreas agreed on the date of the summit in a high-level meeting last week.

The lines of dialogue between North and South Korea were reopened in January for the first time in two years, culminating in the North Koreans attending the Winter Olympics.

As recently as this weekend, Trump told associates he was looking forward to the summit, which he agreed to on the spot when presented the invitation from Kim.

The North Koreans want the meeting to take place in their capital, Pyongyang. The North has yet to officially confirm such intent or Kim's interest in meeting Trump. South Korea's National Intelligence Service Chief Suh Hoon has been in close contact with his USA and North Korean counterparts. The sides mentioned the end of May - beginning of July as a "current target". It is more likely that the North's United Front Department would be in charge...

Later this month (April), Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae In are to hold what would be the three inter-Korean summit.
