Deadly fire in Trump Tower in Manhattan

The massive blaze shot out several windows on the 50 floor

An investigation was underway Sunday into a blaze in Trump Tower that left one man dead and sent six firefighters to the hospital. Soon, flames could be seen making their way across the unit as dark plumes of smoke billowed upward, obstructing numerous floors above.

According to ABC 7, New York's ABC affiliate, investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.

Brassner was a friend of the late artist Andy Warhol and is mentioned several times in the legendary New Yorker's 1989 autobiography, The Andy Warhol Diaries.

Mr Trump's son, Eric Trump, also thanked the fire and police departments for their response.

President Donald Trump thanked firefighters in a tweet.

Two decades before he was president, Trump got political when he spent thousands of dollars lobbying City Council members not to pass the bill - because it would be too expensive for his apartment buildings. When asked to comment on the President's tweet, Nigro said the building "sure stood up quite well". Firemen (and women) did a great job.

Four firefighters suffered less serious injuries, Mr Nigro said.

Trump told the New York Times that he had modified his views and would install sprinklers in Trump World Tower residential units at the cost of $3 million because it made people feel safer.

"Thank you to the fantastic men and women of the NYFD who extinguished a fire in a residential apartment @Trump Tower".

Saturday's fire is the 2nd fire in Mr. Trump's Fifth Opportunity constructing this year: 2 civilians suffered small injuries and a firemen was injured by particles in a fire on January 8 on the top of the structure. 200 Firefighters and EMS - emergency medical services - members are on scene.

Mr Trump responded to the fire via Twitter. The upper floors, the residence floors, are not sprinklered'.

Nigro later said the fire wasn't fully under control, around an hour after Trump tweeted the fire was out, as the fire commissioner said there was still smoke in the building.

Trump Tower opened in 1983, and only has sprinklers on the first 10 floors, which have commercial tenants.

In the Reuters News video below, Commissioner Daniel Nigro gives more informaiton. It also complimented the building saying it was "well built". "All we could do is put wet towels under the door and pray".
