Vatican Arrests Former DC-Based Diplomat on Child Pornography Charges

Dayton ISD music teacher, boy scouts leader charged with five counts of child pornography

His arrest comes after an eight-month investigation by the Holy See, which was first informed of a potential problem by the US State Department previous year.

The priest is being held in a cell in the barracks of the Vatican Gendarmerie. - On Saturday Vatican police arrested former Vatican diplomat Fr. Carlo Alberto Capella, who has been under investigation for the violation of laws concerning the possession of child pornography and its distribution or sale.

Capella was immediately ordered back to the Vatican, and the Canadian police issued a nationwide warrant for his arrest the next month. However, the paragraph 5 referred to in the Vatican statement says that "the penalty is increased if a considerable quantity of pornographic material is involved".

After Capella was recalled to Rome, police in Windsor, Canada said they had issued an arrest warrant for him on suspicion of possessing and distributing child pornography on the internet.

A Niagara Falls man who is currently on parole for a 2011 manslaughter conviction in the death of his 22-month-old daughter now faces federal charges of receiving and possessing child pornography.

The 2013 law under which he was arrested provides for "one to five years imprisonment and a fine from €2,500 to €50,000 [$3,000 to $61,000]".

Msgr. Capella's trial would be the first criminal trial for child pornography in Vatican City.

Capella, who has the title of monsignor in an honorary manner and is not a bishop, worked as a counselor for the Nunciature in Washington and before that had worked in The Section for Relations with States of the Vatican Secretariat of State (Holy See).

He died in hospital in 2015 at the age of 67 before his trial before a Vatican court could begin.
