Celtics G (knee) to miss playoffs, report says

Boston Celtics guard Kyrie Irving left sit with teammates Jaylen Brown center and Marcus Smart during the first quarter of the team's NBA basketball game against the Oklahoma City Thunder in Boston Tuesday

Kyrie Irving, or "the kid" as LeBron called his former teammate in September, will have a second left knee surgery in two weeks on Saturday and not play again this season, according to the Boston Celtics.

Irving, who suffered a patella fracture in the 2015 NBA Finals, had a procedure to remove a tension wire in his knee late last month after experiencing increasing discomfort. That wire was placed in 2015 to fix a fractured patella tendon.

The path at least looks clear for James and the Cavaliers after it was learned Irving will miss the rest of this season and the playoffs, ESPN reported Thursday.

The official spoke on the condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because the team has not released the news.

Following his original procedure last month, the team had said the knee was structurally sound and the kneecap healed, but the wire had been putting pressure on the knee.

Offseason pickup Marcus Morris averaged almost 20 points a game last month and was key in Boston's recent six-game win streak. An announcement is expected to be made soon by the team.

There was initially hope that he would return during the playoffs after having what the Celtics called a "minimally invasive procedure", but that is not going to happen. The Celtics (53-25) hold the No. 2 seed in the conference.

"This season was only a snapshot of what's to come from me", he said in his post. Per the Celtics, the screws will be removed "to ensure that no infection remains in the knee". Trust Me. "The journey back to the top of Mt. Everest continues".

Prior to going down to injury, Irving was averaging 24.4 points an 5.1 assists on 49 percent shooting.
