Bollywood star Salman Khan convicted of antelope poaching case

As Salman Khan is held guilty in the blackbuck case a look at money riding on Bollywood’s Bhai

The news of Bollywood superstar Salman Khan's five-year jail sentence in a blackbuck poaching case has sent shockwaves across the celebrity world and sharply divided the public opinion. The sentence was stayed by a higher court during appeal.

The poaching happened in 1998, when Khan and his co-stars were out on a hunting trip in Bhagoda ki Dhani in the western state of Rajasthan while filming the blockbuster movie "Hum Saath Saath Hai".

The "Dabangg" actor was in February 2006 convicted in the blackbuck hunting case, slapped a fine and sentenced to five years in jail.

In Jodhpur court, local lawyers complained that VIP treatment is being given to Salman and other four actors and their entries to the court in being prohibited due to the treatment is given to them.

Bishnoi said that Khan's arrest warrant was being prepared.

He has been found guilty under Section 51 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, which carries maximum punishment of six years and minimum one-year jail term.

Public prosecutors alleged that Khan, 52, and four other actors in the auto with him fled the scene when they were spotted, leaving the animals' carcasses behind.

The trial of the case was in progress since the last 19 years and the judge in the Jodhpur court had reserved the order after the final arguments on March 28.

In an unrelated case, he was acquitted in December 2015 of shooting and killing a gazelle and two antelopes in separate incidents, after previously being convicted by a lower court. He spent a week in a Jodhpur jail before being granted bail. The Rajasthan high court, however, suspended the sentence in 2007.

Khan has had other brushes with the law. He launched a charity called Being Human - The Salman Khan Foundation that took on various health and education initiatives and was seen participating in various philanthropic activities.

The other actors, among them Saif Ali Khan and Sonali Bendre, were acquitted by the court in Jodhpur for lack of evidence.

He ran over five people with his auto back in 2002, ending up killing one of them.

While the cases piled up in court, Salman courted notoriety on the side too.
