Several lanes on the Sydney Harbour Bridge remain closed this morning due to an ongoing police operation.

Police rescue officers followed the man on to the structure but it was proving hard reach him because he kept moving, a NSW Police spokeswoman said.

The man's motivations for climbing the bridge are unclear.

"Please be aware the speed on the SHB is now 40km/h while the police operation continues - motorists please slow down as there are emergency service officers responding to this ongoing incident".

To keep ahead of traffic updates, keep an eye on the LiveTrafficSyd Twitter account, which is covering the delays around the bridge.

Superintendent Michael Fitzgerald says the man - who rode a bike to the bridge - was known to police and would face "significant charges" after being treated in hospital.

The 44-year-old climber was described as "distressed and rambling", when officers finally convinced him to walk back down, Network Ten reports.

Just before 10am Police managed to coax the man off the bridge after a standoff lasting about five hours, he was seen in handcuffs as he was led down the bridge and then lifted onto a stretcher by paramedics. Long queues of traffic were backed up on the bridge in both directions.

Drivers were advised to avoid the area. (9NEWS) Motorists are being urged to stay away from the Sydney Harbour Bridge amid a police operation.
