Intel says some CPUs with Spectre v2 CAN'T BE FIXED

Haifa team sires Intel's 'best processor ever' for laptops

The guidance explains that an Intel product earns "Stopped" status because, "After a comprehensive investigation of the microarchitectures and microcode capabilities for these products, Intel has determined to not release microcode updates for these products for one or more reasons".

The affected chips cover a broad range of families, many of which were released around a decade ago and some of which have ceased production in the meantime, so it's hard to say how many systems will actually remain at risk due to this change. We've asked Intel to provide that list and will update the story if the company replies.

We contacted Intel for more comment on its patching plans and situation, but the chipmaker has yet to reply. The new memory is developed to accelerate the system performance besides increasing the responsiveness of SATA-based storage technology without negotiating on storage limit.

The full list of architectures includes Penryn (2007), Yorkfield (2007), Wolfdale (2007), Bloomfield (2008), Clarksfield (2009), Nehalem-based Jasper Forest (2010), and Intel Atom "SoFIA" (2015). The company mentioned it as the first mobile Intel processor with six cores and twelve threads.

Apple's partnership with Intel is what helped revive the Mac's popularity, and then move by the tech giant would be a big blow to the chip maker.

Intel and AMD may need to revisit their microcode fixes for Meltdown and Spectre.

Meltdown and Spectre are related vulnerabilities in how CPUs handle data cache timing, with the Spectre flaws known as variant 1 and variant 2, and Meltdown as variant 3.

The performance impact of Meltdown patches makes it essential to move systems to Linux 4.14. In an update to the mitigation guide, the company said it has stopped working on Spectre Variant 2 mitigation for some processor series because fixes are either impractical or the processors are no longer widely supported.

Now, financial analyst Wasmi Mohan - who works at Merrill Lynch - has added further discussion to the rumours by claiming that Apple would be able to boost productivity by making its own chips. Intel has also already released microcode updates for every CPU released within the past five years, from Sandy Bridge (2nd generation) onwards.
