It does correctly list England's "magical moment" as the "miracle mile" of 1954 when Roger Bannister beat Australian John Landy with both men running a mile in under four minutes - the first time two athletes had done so in the same race.

The Commonwealth Games 2018 opening ceremony started with a history of the earth in the middle of the stadium. "I'm not a veteran yet".

71 countries will be taking part in the Games which will run for over 10 days. The finals will be held on the final weekend - August 13 to 15 - on the Gold Coast.

A smaller group halted the Queen's baton relay briefly earlier Wednesday by blocking a road near Main Beach before the route was amended for the final 14 baton bearers to continue. But David Zolkwer, the artistic director, sought to place indigenous communities at the heart of an opening ceremony which he meant to convey a message of "how we are alike and what we share - rather than on what sets us apart".

In a statement, Queensland Police said it will not tolerate "disruptive behaviour" during the Games.

Mark Peters, GOLDOC chief executive, said "we are all devastated and gutted" by events in South Africa.

"Over the years these "Friendly Games" have shown the potential of the Commonwealth to connect people of different backgrounds and nationalities", the prince told the near-capacity crowd in the 35,000-seat Carrara Stadium.

The competition begins on Thursday and the first gold medal will be contested in women's triathlon.

The Cook Islands will compete in track and field, bowls, swimming and weightlifting events. Deputy Commissioner Steve Gollschewski said the allegation involved "an assault of an aggravated matter". He declined to give further details.

Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games will hold the largest ever Para-sport programme. Long-time skipper Ed Jenkins retired at the start of the season, and his replacement, Lewis Holland, was injured in the team's last World Series tournament before the games. In Hockey, Kenneth Bain, Alan Forsyth, David Forsyth, William Marshall and Lee Morton, who are all from or stay in Paisley, and Michael Bremner, who hails from Kilbarchan, are all part of the 18-strong men's squad heading to the Games.
