Canada should take in Rohingya refugees, says Trudeau's special envoy

Myanmar minister to visit Cox's Bazar Rohingya camps this month

Thai authorities confirmed that they sent the boat back out to sea.

"Canada should signal a willingness to welcome refugees from the Rohingya community in both Bangladesh and Myanmar and should encourage a discussion among like-minded countries to do the same", he says, adding that this would in no way diminish the responsibility of Myanmar's government for the violent expulsion of the population.

He said that he hoped the Council would be able to visit Rakhine state, the epicentre of the Rohingya crisis from where an estimated 700,000 refugees have fled to neighbouring Bangladesh. Transnational human trafficking syndicates working in concert with various authorities operated numerous boats.

"The initial report said they were docking near Koh Lanta this morning to avoid the storm", he was quoted as saying by AFP, referring to the Thai island popular with tourists.

But there have been concerns desperate migrants might start taking to the high seas again after mainly Buddhist Myanmar launched a new crackdown previous year that forced about 700,000 members of the stateless Muslim minority to flee to Bangladesh. There are signs that overcrowding in Bangladeshi camps could prompt many others to make similarly perilous voyages.

Six Malaysian government ships were mobilized off Langkawi after officials received intelligence that a boat carrying 56 Rohingya had anchored near Thailand on Sunday because of rough seas, Rozali said.

While the origin of the Rohingya has not be determined, Krabi police chief Col. Pattanachak Chakrabhan said most of the boat's occupants likely came from Myanmar's Rakhine state and had planned to take refuge in Malaysia.

Aye is expected to meet Foreign Minister A.H. Mahmood Ali and Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, foreign ministry officials told BenarNews.

Although initially barred from entering Rakhine state, the epicentre of the Rohingya humanitarian crisis, Rae was able to travel to the region in February.

The panel also said Myanmar's Social Welfare Minister Win Myat Aye was "likely" to visit the Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh soon.

Experts and dignitaries from Bangladesh and several other countries as well as different worldwide organizations made the call in the "Dhaka Declaration" that they came up with at the end of the conference, outlining measures to find sustainable solutions to the ongoing Rohingya crisis.

In February, the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) warned that at least 100,000 Rohingya huddling in squalid and low-lying refugee camps interspersed with rolling hills could be in grave danger from landslides and floods caused by monsoonal rains.

The U.N. says about 150,000 refugees in Bangladesh's southeast - where almost one million Rohingya in total live in shanties on hillsides - are extremely vulnerable to disease and disaster this rainy season.

"In line with the UNHCR study on vulnerability of the Rohingya living at the hills in Ukhia, we have identified some 25,000 most vulnerable people facing the threat of landslide, flooding and cyclones", Chowdhury told BenarNews.
