Apple Snags Former Google AI Chief To Make Siri More Powerful

Google Home and Home Mini smart speakers are powered by Google Assistant

Apple nicked the rival, Google AI (artificial intelligence) department.

Mr Giannandrea is an engineer by training and will run Apple's machine learning and AI strategy, according to The New York Times.

When discussing Siri's flaws it's sometimes hard to know how much to blame outdated technology, and how much to blame Apple's unique way of approaching things for Siri's lack of functionality. While Apple's AI is lacking sophistication, John Giannandrea is expected to make some major changes to the AI platform and to put it at the same level as Microsoft's Cortana, Amazon's Alexa and Google's Assistant.

Mr. Giannandrea, who joined Google back in 2010 when the Mountain View, California search-giant acquired Metaweb (where he served as Chief Technical Officer), is revered for his contributions in helping Google integrate AI throughout its software/hardware products including Google search, Google Assistant, Gmail and more.

A machine learning expert, John Giannandrea devised technologies that helped AI shape the way various Google services came to evolve over time. Its latest move is to poach John Giannandrea, Google's head of AI.

Metaweb - at that time - was focusing its efforts on building something described as a "database of the world's knowledge". He also said that Giannandrea shares its commitment to privacy and its thoughtful approach as it make computers even smarter and more personal. Other recent high-profile appointments made by Apple in the space include Carnegie Mellon professor, Russ Salakhutdinov.

When it comes to concerns of the rapid advancements of AI technology, Giannandrea has previously said in an MIT interview, "I understand why people are concerned about it but I think it's gotten way too much airtime". Apple will let users see what data has been stored on the servers and allow them to download everything or just specific items individually such as contacts, photos, calendar entries and others. Jeff Dean, one of the talented minds within Google's AI projects and co-founder of Google Brain, will be taking over Gianandrea role, which will minimize any impact.
