Volunteers Prepare for Easter Egg Hunt

There will be something to do for everyone this Easter weekend

Kids recylce plastic eggs gather Saturday during the Charleston Fishing Families community egg hunt festivities at Bastendorff Beach Park.

Bayou Rum chose to host an Easter egg hunt with a twist: only those 21 and older could participate.

Lila Grace Hunter, 7, Swoyersville, was also quick to explain her egg, with several letters of the alphabet on it.

"Because you get to have fun and spend time with your friends", says Rivera Santos.

But Vera and Skylov, for their part, seemed more interested in their potential haul of Easter eggs.

He said that his grandfather had had a fun time, and that he liked the new location in the lower part of Willow Park. She said she had her eyes on a stuffed bear, but another child got to it first.

Right now, it looks like we'll see more light shower activity for late Thursday, then more of a steady rain on Friday and some weaker showers lingering into early Saturday.

The faint beeping of a hot pink egg draws the attention of nearby students and soon they home in on the device during a special Easter egg hunt for visually impaired children.

"It went way better than expected", she said.

The hunt was held at Northwest Middle School, and offered 3,000 filled eggs ready to be scooped up in baskets on three different fields. Vera shrieked after her father opened an egg with a circular token in it.

Eggs contained chocolate, candy and "treasures" like small toys, figurines or rings. Once the eggs were fully cooked, the baskets were placed in one of six five-gallon buckets, with red, orange, yellow, green, blue or purple dye.

Lisa Kochel, one of the organizers, said the day was a success, especially with the nice weather.

"I had plans, but in the end I forgot about it", John Britt said. "But they all get picked up".

The artificial turf is "not good for staking (hunt areas) and hiding eggs", said Shannon Leon, interim recreation and community resources manager with the city.
