Sinclair Anchors Forced To Echo Trump's 'Fake News' Rhetoric

Jimmy Kimmel condemns Sinclair ‘fake stories’ warning as ‘extremely dangerous

The Sinclair Broadcast Group (SBG) was heavily criticized in a video compiled by Deadspin for pushing a pro-Trump stance across several local media channels.

"But we're concerned about the troubling trend of irresponsible, one-sided news stories plaguing our country", the script reads, sounding similar to media criticism President Trump often aired. "The sharing of biased and false news has become all too common on social media", the script reads.

Scott Livingston, Sinclair's senior vice president of news, has said the statements are meant to emphasize the company's commitment to fact-based reporting. The promos, which echo President Trump's anti-media talking points, went viral over the weekend after Deadspin edited dozens of them together to show how anchors across the country were reading the same script. More alarming, some media outlets publish these same fake stories-stories that just aren't true-without checking facts first.

What: A frightening look at the scourge of "false news" warnings invading local news broadcasts, courtesy of Sinclair Media. But even so, he took time on Sunday night to follow up on the conservative-run Sinclair Broadcasting Group, a TV empire that Oliver likens to "a brainwashed cult".

We all know Donald Trump watches "Fox & Friends", but he may also be tuning in to John Oliver's "Last Week Tonight", if Monday morning's tweet in support of Sinclair Broadcast Group is any indication.

In case you missed it, Sinclair owns about 200 news stations across the country, including four in Pennsylvania - WOLF (FOX56) in Wilkes-Barre; WHP (CBS21) in Harrisburg; and WJAC (NBC6) in Johnstown.

Democratic congressman and ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee Adam Schiff said Monday that the requirement is "moving America one step closer to its own version of state run media". Sinclair has been a subject of concern for many since previous year, when Oliver initially covered the conservative company. "I felt like a POW recording a message", another said.

"The promos served no political agenda, and represented nothing more than an effort to differentiate our award-winning news programming from other, less reliable sources of information", Sinclair stated. The kicker line is about how "this is extremely unsafe to a democracy" - apparently written unironically by Sinclair.

Ms. Pellizzaro said she can talk about Sinclair more freely now because she is working in academia, whereas journalists at stations owned by Sinclair might feel pressured not to bite the hand that feeds them. Not only does what they're being told to do grossly compromise journalistic integrity, but making it mandatory for on-air personalities to recite the agenda of a leader is basically tantamount to state-run TV that we associate with places like North Korea and Russian Federation.

Sinclair did not return requests for comment.

But Sinclair got a vote of confidence on Monday in a tweet from Trump. But the latest critiques of Sinclair's approach to local news could put pressure renewed pressure on the FCC as it reviews the merger.
