UN Blacklists A Big Batch Of Sanctions Violators Secretly Helping North Korea

UN approves new North Korea-related sanctions

The UN Security Council imposed new sanctions against North Korea, the restrictions relating to ships and shipping companies associated with the smuggling of oil and coal, reports the Chronicle.info with reference to the Ukrainian truth.

In a press release, the UNSC announced the blacklisting of 21 shipping companies and 27 ships whose assets will be frozen for helping the North evade sanctions on coal, oil and other fuels.

Acting on a request from the United States, it was the largest-ever package of sanctions designations on North Korea approved by a council committee, diplomats said.

The action bans global port entry for 13 North Korean oil tankers and cargo vessels, and 12 other ships suspected of helping North Korea smuggle oil and banned commodities.

According to the sanctions, Tsang now faces a travel ban imposed by the United Nations, while his assets have been frozen.

Two other North Korean ships out of the 27 are only slapped with an asset freeze.

Tension over North Korea's tests of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles surged past year and raised fears of USA military action in response to the North's threat to develop a nuclear weapon capable of hitting the US mainland.

However, the situation has eased significantly since North Korea in February sent athletes to the Winter Olympics in South Korea.

The move was "clear sign that the worldwide community was united" in intensifying pressure against North Korea, US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley stated.

Earlier this month, the White House said Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping agreed in a phone conversation to keep up the sanctions pressure on North Korea until Pyongyang takes concrete steps toward denuclearization. China has postponed the decision until March 2 with no explanation.

The MOFA said the efforts showed the government's determination to follow the sanctions of the global community against North Korea, and to impose diplomatic and economic pressure on Pyongyang.

The remaining firms are based in Singapore, Samoa, the Marshall Islands and Panama.

The U.N. Security Council has unanimously boosted sanctions on North Korea since 2006 in a bid to choke off funding for Pyongyang's nuclear and ballistic missile programs, banning exports including coal, iron, lead, textiles and seafood, and capping imports of crude oil and refined petroleum products.
