Lydia Ko of New Zealand makes a shot out of the rough on the fourth hole during round one of the ANA Inspiration on the Dinah Shore Tournament Course at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California. The ANA Inspiration is the LPGA Tour's first major.

Thompson, a nine-time tour victor and 2014 champion of this event, conceded she was eager to return.

All the focus may be on Lexi Thompson, a year on from the well-documented penalty which cost her victory, but Wie will be very much a contender.

They were found at a local second-hand sports store by some golf fans who saw Kim talking about her predicament in a television interview.

Still, in a rousing rally, she pushed the tournament to playoff before falling to So Yeon Ryu.

"I don't know if I would say it's a relief", she said.

"I just got really dizzy".

At 28, Wie is still waiting for that breakthrough, but with rejuvenated confidence her body and game might finally be back in good enough shape to make the Sunday leap into Poppie's Pond.

The Thompson incident prompted a global rule change limiting video evidence that has been called the "Lexi rule". Thompson overwhelmed Wie in the final round of her 2014 victory. Case in point - the third hole, on which Lexi blasted her drive almost 350 yards down the fairway. After a poor drive forced her to pitch her ball into play from beside a tree, Thompson somehow curled a mid-range par putt in the right side door.

The duo clearly had the largest gallery.

Thompson was delighted to get a solid first round under her belt on a course she loves, but which inevitably brings back unwelcome memories of past year.

"I like this place and I always feel good playing here".

"There were two little girls that followed me every day past year and were giving me high fives, especially when everything was going on".

"Back nine I felt a lot better. Just driving in with the snow on the mountains and how handsome the flowers are and everything, this week just puts a smile on my face".

Lindberg, an Oklahoma State alum, played a straightforward round, hitting 14 greens in regulation and birdieing the closing hole to break a three-way tie for the lead.

"I get to hit my driver a lot on this golf course", Thompson said after posting her only bogey of the day on the par-5 ninth.

The seventh hole pretty much summed up how the day went for each competitor.

Thompson was leading by three shots during the final round when she was informed by tournament officials she was being penalised for an incident which took place the previous day. She won the Vare Trophy and was the Golf Writers Association of America Player of the Year, but she has had mixed results in this young season.

Uehara made what could have been a demoralising bogey at her opening hole, but responded well with birdies at the next two. "I hit some really solid iron shots". "That was a total shock to me". Ryu got off to a slow start with a 75, a number matched by Michelle Wie.
