Fire at United Kingdom airport forces flight cancellations

A fire has broken out on a car park shuttle bus at Stansted Airport in London sending plumes of thick smoke emerging from the burning wreckage

An Essex Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "Crews reported on arrival that a bus, positioned outside the terminal entrance, was well alight".

A FIRE has broken out on a auto park shuttle bus at Stansted Airport near London.

Parts of Stansted Airport have been evacuated after a fire broke out on a shuttle bus.

The terminal was partially evacuated while firefighters tackled the fire.

The fire service said it believes the fire was caused accidentally by an electrical fault on the bus.

Several passengers have described chaotic scenes inside the terminal after the fire was extinguished.

"People were going to the airline website checking their flights and all the information had gone from there too".

The airport says it will reopen with "flights expected to operate as normal", although advised passengers to check with their airlines. "The biggest problem was not being able to get out the doors and a lack of communication".

"We sincerely apologise for any delays or inconvenience caused by these disruptions which are outside of our control". Our terminal team and additional staff have worked around the clock to provide welfare assistance to those passengers who were affected by the flight cancellations.

She said: "We arrived at the airport and after a lot of waiting we got through security and staff told us all flights were running but delayed".

Some passengers were given the option of having their luggage mailed to their home address if they needed to leave the airport quickly.
