Ashok Gehlot replaces Janardan Dwivedi as AICC general secretary

Ashok Gehlot has worked closely with Congress president Rahul Gandhi in the recent Gujarat assembly elections

Mr. Dwivedi was also part of a four-member committee that was managing the day-to-day running of the party in the absence of Sonia Gandhi as the then Congress president, when she went overseas for treatment.

"Congress President Rahul Gandhi has designated Ashok Gehlot as general secretary incharge, organisation and training, in place of Janardan Dwivedi, general secetary AICC", Dwivedi said in a statement.

Gandhi also appointed former Union Minister Jitendra Singh as the new All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge of Odisha. He had also headed the party's communication department and was in charge of key States like Haryana.

Congress on Friday chose to remove senior leader Ashok Gehlot as general secretary in-charge for the state of Gujarat.

However, with elections to Rajasthan Assembly only a few months away, it remains to be seen whether Gehlot would continue to campaign aggressively in the state as his new assignment entails spending more time at the party headquarters in Delhi. Jitendra Singh will be party's in-charge in Odisha.

A press release by the AICC read, "The party appreciates the hard work and contribution of Shri".

Since the assembly elections in early 2017, the piecemeal changes effected in the Congress have given an indication of Rahul's intent to bring in younger leaders in the AICC secretariat.

Meanwhile, as the Rajasthan Assembly Elections are due to held in the later part of 2018, Ashok Gehlot has been given the responsibility after his good performance in the Gujarat elections this year.

On Friday, the Congress also announced the appointment of Lalji Desai as the new chief organizer of Seva Dal, the grassroots front organization of the party. He further said that more youth would be associated with the Congress by apprising them of the party ideology and the contribution as well as sacrifices of the great leaders of yesteryears, who built the party brick by brick.

The changes are part of a major revamp including a new-look Central Working Committee (CWC) that is in the offing.
