Facebook bans third-party data for targeted advertisements

Facebook Users Call For Privacy Regulation After User Data Breach

The memo, Bosworth said in tweets and a statement released shortly after the news report, was meant to be provocative and led to debate that "helped shape our tools for the better".

"All the questionable contact importing practices", Bosworth continued.

The ugly truth is that we believe in connecting people so deeply that anything that allows us to connect more people more often is *de facto* good. According to the sources, Facebook is taking time for deeper review in order to ensure that they make the right trade-offs regarding user data. Maybe you just love Facebook, which is also fine. Maybe it even saves the life of someone on the brink of suicide.

In the memo obtained by Buzzfeed News, entitled "The Ugly", long-time executive Andrew Bosworth explained that Facebook believes the risks of growth are worth the larger goal: connecting people to one another across the globe.

The social network said it is also shutting down 'Partner Categories, ' a feature which enables more precise targeting of ads by combining information from Facebook with data aggregated by outside companies such as Experian and Acxiom.

"This was one that most people at Facebook including myself disagreed with strongly", Zuckerberg said.

The statement is unlikely to quell concerns about the group's actions and Facebook's role more generally in USA elections and public discourse.

The three users - one of whom lives in California - filed their suit Tuesday at the Northern District of California in San Francisco, alleging Facebook improperly collected their phone call and text message logs via Messenger and monetized the data for advertising purposes.

Wednesday's announcement follows revelations that a Trump-affiliated consulting firm, Cambridge Analytica, got data on millions of Facebook users. Two former Facebook employees told BuzzFeed News that Bosworth is known at the company for being blunt.

He predicted that Google would be hit by "enormous" fines, like the 2.4 billion euro ($3 billion) one meted out by the European Union a year ago, and that its parent firm, Alphabet, could be broken up by United States and European administrations.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg apologized for the "breach of trust" caused by Cambridge Analytica. "We're ramping up our fact-checking efforts to fight false news around elections", said product manager Tessa Lyons. He has finished the demanded apology tour, publishing an article on Facebook about the problem, engaging in discussions where he repeated the written statements and eventually arriving on CNN to say the same again, but on-camera this time.

"The objective of this post. was to bring to the surface issues I felt deserved more discussion", he said. "We've heard loud and clear that privacy settings and other important tools are too hard to find and that we must do more to keep people informed", the duo wrote in the blog post.

Bosworth says in a tweet that the memo didn't reflect his real view, but was a deliberately provocative viewpoint created to stimulate debate within the company.
