Preparing for the hunt: Jaycees gear up for Easter tradition

On a chilly afternoon in Hammond, children and community members gathered at Hessville Park for the 15th annual Easter Egg Hunt. The free event is for children through age 12 and will feature thousands of eggs and 45 Easter baskets as prizes.

All of the proceeds will go to the turtle rescue at the Gulf World Marine Institute.

But certain eggs got kids an even bigger prize.

Chilly temperatures and the possibility of snow didn't stop eager hunters from gathering outside of the former Traughber Junior High School on Franklin Street near downtown Oswego on Saturday morning, to search for Easter eggs at the Oswegoland Optimist Club's annual Easter Egg Hunt.

Lucky egg finders will take the winning certificate, found inside the egg, along with the egg, to the Community Services office located at 605 N. El Dorado St., second floor of the Cesar Chavez Library.

In 2017, 40.8% of Easter spend was on non-retail products, such as activities, with only 53.4% of shoppers purchasing chocolate eggs and other Easter treats, compared to 57.5% in the previous year.

It was the town's first ever Easter egg hunt, and town officials were happy with the turn out. "Regardless of the weather, everyone still comes and has a good time".

The Easter Bunny will also be present, as will the Lion's mascot.

Australian shepherd Harper Lee took her time sniffing the plastic eggs outside, and although she could have picked up the eggs with her mouth and dropped them in the basket, Harper Lee's owner, Robin Stanbridge of Quincy, helped her out.

"The La Porte Jaycees Port-A-Pit Chicken Sale is a great way to both support Jaycees events in our community and save having to cook the day before Easter", said Jim Jozaitis, Port-A-Pit co-chair.
