Telecom scam: Israeli police question PM Netanyahu for second time

Israeli police questioned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday over his alleged dealings with the country's largest telecommunication company.

The police statement confirmed that the Netanyahus were interviewed by investigators from the national fraud squad and the Israel Securities Authority, without giving further details.

Media reports said Netanyahu's wife, Sara, and son Yair were also being questioned at another location. This is the Netanyahu's tenth interrogation since 2017 and second in 2018.

Walla - Bezeq's popular news site - allegedly provided favourable coverage of Netanyahu and his family in return.

Protesters outside the prime minister's home in Jerusalem shouted slogans and held placards condemning Netanyahu and calling him a liar.

In 2017, police also interrogated Netanyahu over the so-called Case 1000 and Case 2000.

This is the ninth time Netanyahu has been questioned in various cases directly or indirectly concerning him. Police have yet to make a recommendation about charges in the case.

Two former Netanyahu confidants - Sholomo Filber and Nir Hefetz - have agreed to turn state's witness in the case.

The regulations are worth hundreds of millions of dollars to Bezeq, of which Elovitch was, until recently, a major shareholder.

The cases appear to be gaining steam with a close Netanyahu confidant agreeing to cooperate with the inquiry and testify in the corruption cases, according to Israeli media.

He maintains he is innocent and has denounced allegations against him as a media and police witch hunt. Israel's opposition accused Netanyahu of manufacturing the crisis in order to force a new election.
