School District Arms Students With Rocks

An exclusive News 9 poll asked more than 550 likely voters for their thoughts on a possible teacher walkout and education funding in Oklahoma among other topics

Students and teachers in rural Pennsylvania have been armed with buckets of rocks as a last resort to fight back against school shooters.

During testimony before the State House Education Committee last week, Helsel explained that "e$3 very classroom has been equipped with a five-gallon bucket of river stone".

Helsel said the idea of equipping classrooms with rocks grew out of his reading of the active-shooter defence programme known as ALICE - Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate.

He also added that throwing small rocks is just one small part of the district's security plan.

He stressed that doors have been re-enforced, making them hard to break through, and students have also been trained in "barricading the doors" to make breaching them even more hard. "At one time I just had the idea of river stone".

While some parents and students feel that this would help and support the school's decision, many said they find the whole idea of students throwing rocks at an armed person ludicrous.

The rocks were placed in the classrooms last fall and parents and students were informed.

Though Helsel says his district doesn't have any plans to arm teachers right now, there is one employee trained as a security guard and the district plans to train more employees.

The staff and students were not only given the active shooter training with the shooter simulations but each classroom will have a five-gallon bucket of rocks kept in the classroom closet, ready for aim and action.

A senior at the high school told WNEP he and other students like the plan, saying rocks are "better than books and pencils" when it comes to protection. But one school district in Pennsylvania has chose to try a new tactic of their own.

"We don't want our kids to sit there and be passive targets", Helsel said Friday.

Dori Bornstein said, "At this point, we have to get creative, we have to protect our kids first and foremost".
