City of Atlanta Under Ransomware Cyberattack

A cyber attack has caused outages for several city services and $50,000 in ransom has been demanded to release the city's system, Bottoms said.

He noted that they still don't know whether the attack resulted in the compromise of personal or financial information, but advised city employees to keep a close eye on their bank accounts, just in case their financial information has been stolen and is being misused. Cox said the city's public safety department, water services and airports are operating without incident.

A ransomware attack on the city of Atlanta's government on Thursday morning led to outages of a number of internal and customer-facing applications, as reported by 11Alive.

Atlanta city officials said on Friday that the city's computer systems are still being held hostage by hackers and that investigators are working diligently to improve the situation.

Asked whether the city intends to pay the ransom, Mayor Bottoms said that hasn't been determined.

According to a report from Atlanta NBC affiliate WXIA, a city employee sent the station a screen shot of a ransomware message demanding a payment of $6,800 to unlock each computer or $51,000 to provide all the keys for affected systems.

She verified that this is the first time the City of Atlanta has been attacked by ransomware.

But at a press conference led by city mayor Keisha Bottoms, officials confirmed that they are still attempting to understand the extent of the incident, together with experts from Cisco and Microsoft. The city's public transportation system has also not been affected.

City officials have not said if they'll pay the ransom, CBS said. "All of us are subject to this attack, if you will".

"Because we don't know, I think it would appropriate for citizens to be vigilante in checking their accounts", she said.

The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security were called in to help investigate.

The mayor, Cox, and acting Chief Information Officer Daphne Rackley emphasized that while many systems are operational, there were areas and details about the ongoing investigation which they would not discuss.
