Thousands of Scottish cancer cases 'avoidable' by lifestyle change

More than 3,500 cases of cancer a year in Northern Ireland could be prevented through simple lifestyle changes

New figures calculated from 2015 Cancer Research UK (CRUK) shows that tobacco smoking is the cause of cancer.

Cancer Research UK found the country with the greatest proportion of preventable causes of cancer was Scotland with 41.5%, followed by Northern Ireland on 38%, Wales on 37.8%, and England on 37.3%.

Obesity causes 13 types of the disease, including bowel, breast, womb and kidney cancer. The leading causes of preventable cancer in the United Kingdom are smoking, excess weight and over-exposure to ultra-violet radiation.

Of the 360,000 new cases diagnosed in 2015, about 135,500 could have been prevented, according to Cancer Research UK.

The grandmother of three, from Carlisle, said she weighed 20 stone at the time and admits she did no exercise.

Getting rid of smoking tobacco, exercising and shedding weight may be key lifestyle behaviours that can cut down thousands of cancer cases a week, say researchers, including one of Indian-origin.

The study looked at the number of cases caused by preventable factors including exposure to UV radiation from the sun and sunbeds, alcohol, eating too little fibre, and pollution. It measures whether you're a healthy weight for your height.

While the latest CRUK's campaign showed the connection between obesity and cancer.

Sir Harpal Kumar, Cancer Research UK's chief executive, said: "Leading a healthy life doesn't guarantee that a person won't get cancer, but it can stack the odds in your favour".

"It's clear from this research that obesity is a major problem".

It has now called for a ban on junk food adverts before the 9pm watershed.

In a pilot scheme launched in London and the West Midlands past year, the charity posted advertisements on billboards stating "obesity causes cancer".

Nearly four in ten of all cancers could be avoided by switching to a healthier diet, doing more exercise and giving up smoking, Cancer Research UK has said.

"Given the now high rates of obesity in young people, this represents (like cigarette smoking) a major societal challenge beyond the bounds of the medical arena".
