NYC snow: 3 fatalities as a result of nor'easter's snow

What spring? Winter storm headed to south-central Minnesota Friday, Saturday

The Northeast storm has claimed a second life on New York's Long Island.

The storm is the product of a weather system that previously vexed the South: hail in Texas on Sunday, tornadoes in Alabama on Monday and severe storms in Florida on Tuesday, later developing into the nor'easter blanketing the Atlantic coast from North Carolina to New England in snow.

A springtime nor'easter set to hit the area on Wednesday is shaping up to be a significant storm, with the possibility of 10 inches of snowfall across New York City and winds strong enough to topple tree limbs and power lines. Up to 3 inches could fall on parts of central New Jersey from this initial storm. This storm will produce less snow than the previous one and the wind won't be as powerful as the first two. The weather service predicts wet and heavy snow with wind gusts of up to 35 miles per hour that could cause tree branches to fall and cause power outages.

"Snow will overspread the region early Wednesday and will be heaviest late Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday night before tapering off Thursday morning", the National Weather Service said.

Rates of up to 5 inches per hour were reported, unusual for the Island, meteorologists said.

Metro North Railroad, the Long Island Rail Road and New Jersey Transit were all operating normal schedules, but riders should expect delays. The precipitation will start out as rain or a rain/snow mix but quickly change over to moderate, and at times, heavy snow.

In New Jersey, the state's major utilities reported slightly more than 76,000 customers without service Thursday.

Several schools districts across the tri-state began posting closures Tuesday afternoon ahead of the storm's arrival. Public schools in New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., were closed on Wednesday, while public schools in Boston are closed Thursday.

More than 400 flights have been canceled Thursday in and out of Newark Liberty International and New York's LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy International airports, according to FlightAware, a Houston-based tracking service. The snowstorm was mostly unwelcomed, as residents expressed their desire to get out of the current pattern of frequent coastal storms and on to warmer spring weather.

Parry reported from Seaside Park, New Jersey.
