North Korea reportedly agrees to hold summit preparation talks in March

Kim Jong Un

The Associated Press reports that the two countries have agreed to send officials to hash out the details of a meeting this week at the border village of Panmunjom, where they will discuss the specific topics and date for the two leaders' talks.

It would be the first such summit in 10-and-a-half years and the 3rd overall.

This comes as South Korean President Moon Jae-in is set to meet face-to-face with the rogue state's leader, Kim Jong-un, in April.

A team of three officials will be led by Ri Son Gwon, the chairman of North Korea's committee for the peaceful reunification of the country, the North told its neighbor early on Saturday, the South's Unification Ministry said.

-North Korea summit, Pyongyang will promise to promote a complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization, accept International Atomic Energy Agency inspections and abolish chemical weapons, they said.

Moon said negotiations were continuing ahead of the "historic talks" planned for next month with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un.

Trump shocked many in Washington and around the world earlier this month when he announced that he had accepted a meeting with Kim, the first such meeting between a sitting USA president and his North Korean counterpart.

Last summer he wrote in the same paper that the USA should obviously seek South Korea's agreement before using force, but no foreign government, even a close ally, can veto an action to protect Americans from North Korea's nuclear weapons.

North Korea has agreed to hold high-level talks with South Korea on March 29.

The North on Wednesday broke its silence on the diplomatic thaw with Washington and Seoul, with its official KCNA news agency saying Pyongyang was driving the peace initiative and rejecting suggestions that sanctions forced it to dialogue table.

"The United States has miscalculated".

On Friday, Rodong Sinmun, the official daily of the North's ruling Workers Party, attacked the United States for continued sanctions and pressure on Pyongyang despite diplomatic progress.

Japan's lobbying reflects concern that its own interests, such as the abduction issue related to North Korea's kidnapping of Japanese nationals in the 1970s and 1980s and its development of midrange ballistic missiles, may get sidelined because the Trump-Kim summit appears primarily focused on denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.

"Let's have this conversation by May, or even before that, and let's see how serious North Korea really is", Bolton said, according to a transcript of his remarks posted on the RFA website on Friday.

Bolton, a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, has championed pre-emptive strikes against North Korea and regime change in Iran - making him an outlier even among Republicans.
