'Black Panther' becomes biggest domestic superhero film of all time

Black Panther

In theaters now, director Ryan Coogler's Black Panther stars Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa/Black Panther, Michael B. Jordan as N'Jadaka/Erik "Killmonger" Stevens, Lupita Nyong'o as Nakia, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross, Daniel Kaluuya as W'Kabi, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Winston Duke as M'Baku, Angela Bassett as Ramonda, Forest Whitaker as Zuri and Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaue. So far, it's tied for Rotten Tomatoes' highest-rated superhero movie ever and is the highest-grossing solo superhero movie at the US box office.

Black Panther has added yet another accolade to its growing collection of titles.

The first two Avengers films still hold a hefty lead in worldwide gross, with "The Avengers" netting $1.5 billion, and the followup, "Avengers: Age Of Ultron", making $1.4 billion in 2015.

As of Wednesday, Black Panther stands at $612.1 million domestically and $590.4 million internationally for a $1,202.5 billion global total.

Black Panther enjoyed five straight weeks atop the box office charts that kicked off with a record-breaking opening weekend for the month of February. Presale tickets for that film are already selling at a higher rate than any superhero film ever.

In North America, Black Panther is now the highest-grossing superhero movie ever. The question now is, can it top Jurassic World ($652.2 million) and Titanic ($659.3 million)?

Needless to say, Marvel is definitely going to make Black Panther 2.

The box office update comes from The Hollywood Reporter. But there's little chance of the current estimate falling by the $7 million it would take to leave Marvel's latest in second place for one more day. But, until there's actual movement on the sequel, Coogler and co. and continue to revel in Black Panther's astounding critical and commercial success.
