Guptill called up to New Zealand's Test squad

James Anderson centre has been confirmed England vice-captain for the two-test series against New Zealand ahead

'You don't know till the day before what the side is, so you've just got to prepare as if you're going to play and hope you get the nod when it comes'.

Martin Guptill has been added to the Black Caps' test squad ahead of the first match against England in Auckland on Thursday.

An ECB spokesman confirmed Stokes had come through his spell - his first serious bowl since the one-day series finished - with "no issues" and, weather permitting, would bowl outside on Tuesday and Wednesday.

At 31, some might have concluded Broad may slip into more of an enabling role - especially after Root handed the new ball in last week's two warm-up matches in Hamilton first to Mark Wood and then Chris Woakes.

If he were to play as a specialist batsman, it is likely England would have to sacrifice incumbent number three James Vince in order to make room for a fourth seamer - probably Craig Overton.

Chris Woakes and Mark Wood were handed the new ball alongside James Anderson in England's warm-up games on the New Zealand tour and although a decision was yet to be made Broad was not anxious.

"It has been a pretty fraught time for him and everyone involved in the situation", Strauss told Sky Sports News.

New Zealand's lineup will also undergo a shakeup with all-rounder Mitchell Santner ruled out for the next nine months due to knee surgery, while top-order batsman Ross Taylor is battling a thigh injury sustained during the one-day series.

"The (Eden Park) drop-in pitch generally has been really good but with these pink-ball games you only need a one mad hour and you can break the Test match open".

"He's always great for the team", Moeen said of Stokes, who is trying to prove his bowling fitness before the first Test starts on Thursday afternoon in Auckland but is expected to play even if he can not bowl.

The second match in the series, a traditional red ball match, is at Hagley Oval in Christchurch from March 30.
