4 terrorists gunned down in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district

Three militants killed in J&K gunfight

Three security personnel were injured today as the encounter in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district in Halmatpura in which three militants were killed on Tuesday still rages on.

According to police sources, the militants, who had survived the Army and SOG action, on Tuesday were hiding in the forest when the security forces zeroed in on them.

Four security personnel and five militants were killed so far in the ongoing encounter at Halmatpora area in Kupwar.

"On the basis of material recovered from the site of the gunfight, it looks the slain militants were associated with Lashkar-e-Toiba militant outfit", he said. Among the killed were two men of the Special Operation Group (SOG) of the J&K Police. They said that all the four were critically injured in the clash and later succumbed at Army medical facility in Kupwara.

Militants shot dead two policemen on Wednesday in a gunfight continuing since the day before in north Kashmir's Kupwara district.

A police spokesman said in the encounter, five militants were neutralised.

The terrorists had met their "reception party" (overground workers and militants already present in the Kashmir Valley) after crossing the LoC and were proceeding towards Kupwara town when they were spotted by police personnel, officials said.

Authorities have also rushed additional reinforcements to the forest area to take on militants.

Rich tributes were paid to SOG constable Deepak Thusso at the wreath laying ceremony at the Srinagar police lines on Thursday. "The operation is still in progress", the defence spokesperson said here. Two other policemen have also sustained injuries in the encounter.

"The fire was retaliated by the security forces ensuing an encounter".

Police officials said the government forces have not suffered any causality or damage in the attack.
