Storms strike college, leave trail of damage across South

Severe weather likely this Tuesday afternoon

The tornado watches are valid until 7 p.m. Tuesday in the following Big Bend counties: Lafayette, Suwannee, Taylor, Hamilton, Dixie, Columbia and Gilchrist.

The Federal Aviation Administration placed a ground stop at Tampa International Airport for a time Tuesday afternoon because of storms sweeping the Southeast, prompting dozens of delays and cancellations.

Part of the roof was ripped off the nursing school and Pete Mathews Coliseum, the basketball arena.

"Much like the storms on Monday, these storms will be capable of producing damaging winds, large hail, and even a couple of tornadoes", said Meteorologist Brett Rossio in an AccuWeather report on coastal storms.

The severe weather is expected to continue into Tuesday, with the end of the cold front bringing damaging winds and potential tornadoes across northern and central Florida, southeastern Georgia, the low country of SC and eastern North Carolina, forecasters said. Severe weather is more likely in areas near the coast. Alabama Power Co. said more than 9,000 homes and businesses were without electricity.

Using couch cushions for protection, Brasher hid in the bathtub with his wife, daughter and two grandchildren as the storm passed near Jacksonville State University.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for several counties in the north Florida and south Georgia area.

The National Weather Center's prediction for today projects a potential for severe and damaging weather onto the entirety of Flagler.

Severe storms also dumped massive hailstones in Cullman, Alabama, that damaged hundreds of vehicles Monday night.

"There has been significant damage tonight in parts of Alabama", Gov. Kay Ivey said in a statement.

Forecasters say it would be a rough day for cleaning up.

Impacts could be strong gusty winds, frequent lightning, and small hail. Damage was also reported in Fairburn, Georgia, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) southwest of Atlanta. Dense fog shrouded some areas Tuesday morning.

Georgia Power reported that about 8,000 customers were without power Tuesday morning statewide, with more than 2,000 of them in the Haralson area.

She added, "Our first priority is ensuring our people are safe".
