Google readying "Shopping Actions" program to help retailers take on Amazon

Under a new program retailers can list their products on Google Search and Google Express

Getting their products on Google Home is also bound to be of interest, especially since it's the only real competitor Amazon has in the assistant-enabled devices sector. In exchange for being able to do so, Google will take a cut from each purchase that has originated from one of these platforms, creating a new significant source of revenue for the company. Through Shopping Actions, Google and others may have a greater opportunity to influence shoppers' purchasing patterns and increase the competition in this area. "We see ourselves as part of a solution for retailers to be able to drive better transactions".

Allegre said early results from the Shopping Actions program showed the average size of retailers' online shopping baskets have increased by 30 percent, a sign that consumers want the convenience of shopping directly from their Google searches.

Google says that its data reveals that mobile searchers for "where to buy" surged by 85 percent over the past two years. "Later, in the kitchen, Kai can reorder foil through voice, add it to the same cart using Google Home, and purchase all items at once through a Google-hosted checkout flow".

Using an example, Google wrote: "Shopper Kai can do a search on Google for moisturizing hand soap, see a listing for up & up brand soap from Target, and add it to a Google Express cart". The pay-per-sale business model stands in stark contrast to the firm's traditional digital advertising platform as it completely eliminates the financial barrier to entry for potential partners and is likely aimed at combating the stateside e-commerce dominance of Amazon. The program is open to USA retailers of any size.

Over the past six months, Target said the number of items in shoppers' Google Express baskets have increased by almost 20 percent, on average, as a result of its tie-up with the internet company. The update changes how Google's core algorithm works.

So, the sites that lost the ranking were replaced by other sites, which gained because of the update in the algorithm.

Both Walmart and Target a year ago struck deals to appear in search results via Google Home.

The means with which the search giant is looking to achieve this is a new set of features called Shopping Actions that it unveiled this morning.

Nevertheless, Google Shopping Actions is another big initiative from Google, which has been exploring more and more ways to answer questions raised via Google search.
