Turkish troops, FSA liberate 29 more villages in Afrin

Turkish-backed Syrian Arab fighters stand on an armed vehicle after seizing control of the northwestern Syrian city of Afrin from the Kurdish People's Protection Units

Meanwhile, Syrian forces have taken more than 80 percent of Eastern Ghouta, and a spokesperson from a main rebel faction told The Daily Star they were in "serious" negotiations with the United Nations about a cease-fire agreement.

The administration of Syria's Kurdish-populated northwestern Afrin region has indicated that members of the US-backed People's Protection Units (YPG) militants will shift from direct confrontation to guerrilla tactics in their battles against Turkish military forces and allied militants from the so-called Free Syrian Army.

Turkey now says it will extend the offensive to other Kurdish regions where US forces are stationed alongside the YPG, an ally against so called ISIL.

Afrin is one of three Kurdish cantons in northern Syria on the border with Turkey.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in a speech the flags of Turkey and its Free Syrian Army allies had been raised in the center of Afrin as the "terrorists have fled".

Ankara says the YPG is an extension of the PKK, a marxist Kurdish militant group that has been waging an insurgency in southeast Turkey since the 1980s.

"In the centre of Afrin, symbols of trust and stability are waving instead of rags of terrorists".

Armed groups loyal to Assad last month moved to join the Kurdish defense of Afrin but stayed outside the town after Turkish forces fired artillery in a warning not to advance further, state-run Turkish media reported.

Also on Sunday, the Turkish General Staff said in a statement that 3,603 terrorists were "neutralized" in Afrin while 46 soldiers were killed and another 225 injured.

In Afrin, tens of thousands of civilians have fled in recent days, as Turkish troops encircled the city but left a corridor open to the south. Kurdish YPG officials were not giving up, however, vowing guerilla resistance to the Turkish occupation.

"In all of Afrin's sectors, our forces will become a permanent nightmare" for pro-Ankara forces, the statement said. The army posted video it said was filmed in the center of Afrin, showing a tank stationed under a balcony draped in the Turkish flag, with an FSA banner being waved.

Turkey's army likewise said in a statement that the town is now under the "complete control" of it and its allies.
