Taiwan President thanks U.S. counterpart for signing travel act

China sees Taiwan as a renegade province and has long stated its desire for reunification

The recommendation, however, is in line with the Taiwan Travel Act that was signed into law by Trump Friday and encourages visits between government officials of the two countries at all levels.

President Donald Trump signed off on new rules allowing top-level U.S. officials to travel to Taiwan to meet their Taipei counterparts, a move that will anger Beijing.

The US does not have formal ties with Taiwan but is required by law to help it with self-defence, and is the island's primary source of weapons.

The White House said the Bill, which is non-binding, would have gone into effect yesterday morning, even if Mr Trump had not signed it. Beijing views its policy as the foundation for relations with Washington.

Such a meeting, suggested by the authors of the paper titled "U.S. -Taiwan Relations in a Sea of Change", would address issues of shared interest and concern, and would shatter longstanding practice that dates back to 1979 when the two countries severed official diplomatic ties.

It is also for this reason that Beijing has repeatedly voiced its resolute opposition to the passage of the act, describing it in a Saturday statement from the Chinese Embassy in Washington as a violation of the one-China principle that governs Sino-U.S. and Taiwan-U.S. relations.

Observers say the new law may affect US-China cooperation in dealing with North Korea's missile and nuclear development.

Zeng Fushen, an adviser to a Taipeh think tank, told DW that the new law could destabilize the so far relatively stable three-way relationship between the US, China and Taiwan, adding that Taiwan, as a small country between two great powers, should be very careful. High-level Taiwan officials should be permitted to enter the United States "under respectful conditions" to meet U.S. officials, while Taiwanese economic and cultural representatives should be encouraged to conduct business in the United States.
