USA students stage walkout against gun violence

ABQ students join national walkout seeking safer schools

Students from at least three local high schools participated in a national walkout to protest gun violence Wednesday. The caption: "I'll control my own guns, thank you". She posted a powerful message on her Facebook account condemning the attacks and the policies and participating in the walkout.

After the speakers had finished, and the students went back to classes, one young man remained behind, holding a "Save Lives, Not Guns" sign.

A group of Houghton High School, students organized the 17-minute walkout at Houghton, which drew about 100 students from seventh through 12th grades.

Charlie told The News she was upset at those who didn't see the moment as a time of reflection for those who were affected by school shootings.

Phil Lenkowski, now living in Poland, messaged local parent David Henry Sterry during the protest, saying that he had seen Montclair High School had one of the biggest demonstrations in America.

He appeared in court Wednesday as students across the nation walked out of school to protest gun violence. "But this is not the world I want to live in". They didn't really get into it too much. "We care about money more than we care about you.' It's frustrating".

Students were happy with the level of turnout for a small school. "They didn't get the students that were standing with signs and actually want to be a part of the protest", Ali said.

This national walkout comes just one month after the mass school shooting in Florida when a 19-year old walked in with an AR-15 and started shooting, killing 17.

Classroom instruction continued during the protests, which were supervised by administrators. "We shouldn't have to go to school worrying if we're going to make it home that day".

The school was supportive of the students, said the head of the school, Adam Shapiro.

State Representative Alice Peisch was on hand to observe, but left the speechifying to the students today. I felt helpless. I tried to picture my students in that situation.

In joining the protests, the students followed the example set by numerous survivors of the Florida shooting, who have become gun-control activists, leading rallies, lobbying legislators, and giving TV interviews. A former student is accused of using an AR-15 assault weapon to commit the crime a month before the day of the walkout.

"But that's how they know we're serious", Keene says.

In Parkland, thousands of students slowly filed onto the Stoneman Douglas football field to the applause of families and supporters beyond the fences as law enforcement officers looked on. In response, Keranen reached out and stated gathering up other students.

York Catholic High School principal Katie Seufert said "walking out is not productive". "They are scattered around the country and I can't imagine not being able to see and hug them again".

"We know better than to militarize our schools, that's why we're protesting", Garg said.

"This gun was specifically designed so that a person of low skill, of no skill, could be effective in killing the enemy", Tanzi said.

"We do need some sort of gun laws, some sort of screening", says student, Lily Rakow.

Columbia Gorge Community College also had students and staff participate.
