Arsenal draw CSKA Moscow in Europa League

Wenger understands Mertesacker’s wish to retire

Arsenal have been drawn against CSKA Moscow in the quarter-finals of the Europa League, Irish Times reported.

Arsenal reached the last eight of the competition thanks to goals from Danny Welbeck and Granit Xhaka on Thursday evening.

Season so far: While CSKA will be disappointed to be eight points behind in the race for the Russian Premier League title - they were runners-up to Spartak past year - reaching the quarter-finals of the Europa League is no small achievement.

Arsene Wenger's side thrashed AC Milan 5-1 on aggregate in the last 16, sending out a real statement to all those left in the competition.

Atletico Madrid, CSKA Moscow, Lazio, Marseille, RB Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg and Sporting Lisbon joined Arsenal in the draw with every side presumably eager to avoid Diego Simeone's Atletico side.

CSKA lie third in the Russian league table, level on points with second-placed Spartak Moscow, and eight points behind leaders Lokomotiv.

CSKA beat Arsenal 1-0 in Moscow and earned a draw at the Emirates.

The Europa League quarterfinal first legs will be played on April 5, with the second legs held the following week on April 12.
