Source Code Reveals Shadow Of The Tomb Raider Launch Date

'Tomb Raider' Review: Reboot Brings A Dull Addition To The Franchise

Straying away too far from the source material is frustrating from a fan standpoint. Warner Bros.' reboot of Tomb Raider should now be at the top of that conversation. Two women in fact - Lara Croft, arguably the most beloved female video game character, and Alicia Vikander, an Oscar-winning star shedding her corsets for a decidedly more comfortable (and controversial) outfit. The love story revolves around Lara's relationship with her father. Refusing to accept his death, she soon discovers the site where he was last seen. The early reception pretty much makes it clear that she achieved her goal. Walton Goggins sneers and sweats. Trinity, a sort of hybrid evil corporation/cult, is there en masse, using slave labour to ransack the island and find the tomb for reasons unknown. Tomb Raider hits the basic requirements to be called a decent origin story.

Entertainment Weekly: Vikander, who has clearly been put through the brutal pullups-and-jump-squats gauntlet of action-movie bootcamp, is tiny but powerful, an ab-rippling sprite to Jolie's hourglass Amazonian. After stumbling onto a few clues as to his whereabouts, she heads to Hong Kong, where she meets the son of the last person likely to have seen her dad alive (Daniel Wu) and persuades him to captain his ship into unsafe waters, toward the uninhabited island that was Lord Richard's last known destination. And that's what sells tickets for the Tomb Raider franchise.

Leading the films supporting cast is Daniel Wu (Into the Badlands) as Lara's reluctant companion also in search of answers. Lu Ren is then treated as an afterthought, playing no real consequential role going forward.

With the news out of the way, let's talk wishlist.

Obviously shot on location across Brick Lane and Shoreditch, it's a surprisingly authentic glimpse of modern millennial life (well, up until the high stakes bike chase through the City) that does a good job of setting up Lara Croft as the sort of gutsy heroine who breaks the rules, takes risks, never gives up, etc. etc. etc. "I didn't want to make her rich, living in a mansion".

Beyond that, her character feels nearly joyless. Gone are the Daisy Dukes and knee-high boots of Angelina Jolie's 2001 version of the character.

The actress previously stated that she intends to set herself apart from the Lara Croft portrayal of both the games and movies.

The Shadow of the Tomb Raider leaks have transformed into a full-on torrent. There's little consistency throughout the movie, made all the more infuriating by a post-credits sequence (which won't be spoiled here) that will make viewers wonder how this movie possibly got to that point.

Independent: The film may be based on a video game but we could be back in the world of Ray Harryhausen B-movie matinee adventures of the 1960s and 1970s. But I also wanted the audience to be in the middle of the action with Lara and experiencing everything through her.

How are you feeling about Shadow of the Tomb Raider?
