New York Giants Rumors: Tyrann Mathieu on Big Blue's radar?

Why Giants or Jets aren’t likely destinations for ‘Honey Badger

I think the recent release of former Arizona Cardinals' safety Tyrann Mathieu is one of those rare opportunities that Dallas must break the bank for. When they made it to the NFC Championship Game in 2015 after going 13-3 in the regular season, it felt like their coming out party.

No matter how you analyze Tyrann Mathieu's career or his 2017 season, there's no doubting this: He was a fan favorite in the Valley.

Mathieu had reportedly been asked to take a pay cut by the Cardinals, something Mathieu was reportedly resistant to doing.

However, he did not agree to the new deal the Cardinals were offering, hence his release. He was also due a $5 million roster bonus on March 16. But considering he's only 25, Mathieu is probably looking for a deal in the three-year, $35 million range. His versatility to play multiple roles within that defense has been a big factor in what they've been able to do on that side of the ball.

Through five seasons in Arizona, Mathieu recorded 41 passes defended, 24 tackles for a loss, 11 interceptions, four sacks, and four forced fumbles.

However, he has already torn both ACLs, which was a concern going forward.

The "Honey Badger" is leaving the desert.

Despite the injury, the Cardinals rewarded him with a five-year, $62.5 million contract, with $15.5 million guaranteed. Plus, Mathieu is versatile enough to play cornerback, safety, and even inside linebacker in the subpackages.

Mathieu has said the night he spent in jail for that arrest changed his life. Mathieu only appeared in 10 games the following season and finished with a career-low 35 tackles. Mathieu had his best season in 2015 in which he appeared in 14 games, tallied 89 tackles, 17 pass deflections, five interceptions, one forced fumble, one defensive touchdown while making the Pro Bowl and getting named first-team All-Pro.
